How to Add Space to and External Hard Drive

February 5th, 2009

This video shows you how to add space to an external had drive by replacing the actual drive that is inside the unit. The end result is that the old external hard drive will have more space and at a much lower cost than buying a new external hard drive.
I recommend NewEgg.com for buying an internal hard drive for this project.
This process can also be used to recover data from a hard drive that was in a computer that crashed.

  6. thepimpzle on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

nno he cant because the laptop HDD has a smaller connector but he said that only if the external drive had that type of drive in it would work with it…..you could do it only if the external box has the same connection since they make them small or some are big ok and the big ones usually are normal connectors andreally small ones usually use laptop HDD

  9. mpcman20 on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

it’s not an SATA Port, its an IDE Port. If you had a SATA Port inside the computer, you couldnt connect that HDD haha.

  13. LOVE7FAITH77 on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

What dum ass pulg a HDD while it’s running

  16. GitarStu on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

Just need a USB port and thats all for an external drive. This means a reduced risk of damaging the drive due to bad handling (like the guy on this video) or static.

And what if the PC doesn’t have a SATA port? Or, what if the PC is already running?

  17. slaterking1000 on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

    So can INTERNAL COMPUTER NOOB.
Just need a SATA port opened up case and ur done.

  18. GitarStu on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

He’s got a completely valid point though. The title of the thread is wrong. It should be “how to add a larger drive to an enclosure”.

    So I’m revoking your -1 and giving him a +1 :)

“I just rescued this (smash) from a (smash) computer I broke…somehow”.

Dude, I hope you treat you other gear better than you treat that HD. I’ve never seen one smashed around so much!!

  20. GitarStu on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

Such a n00b comment. External is only a tiny bit slower than internal. And it is so much more convenient than internal as it can be moved around between PCs easily.

Ignore those people. I’m really glad you and others with time to spare are creating instructional videos for the public to see. I’ve got a collection of MyBooks. One went dead. I’ve been searching YouTube for a helpful video like yours so I might recover my lost data. My warrantee expires in 2 days, but I don’t need a new drive - I need my tax data (without spending big $ on recovery). I think I’ll try ripping my drive apart. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

  23. rainxxxx on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

firstly, you dont need jumpers to attach an external hd, secondly jumpers are old school unless you have ide cables

  24. rainxxxx on February 5th, 2009 5:32 am

what is the correct way to turn an external hd off? do you just switch it off just like a normal unit or do you have to shut it down like you would if you were turning your cpu off?
